Nonprofit organizations enrich any community in countless ways, and Boston is no exception. This city is home to so many local groups that reach out to help people (and animals!) in need, and we're proud to acknowledge those that you, the readers, have nominated as the outstanding examples. So while you're out sampling our noms for best burrito or bar-hopping among the nominated dives and fancy cocktail joints, consider making some time for doing good too.

If an afternoon perfecting the art of Medieval Carpentry sounds to you like time well spent, you should probably be at the seventh-annual Boston Skillshare at MIT this weekend. Run by an entirely-volunteer organizing collective, the two-day event features workshops ranging from the somewhat esoteric (“Wild Carrot as a Natural Method of Contraception,” “Making Milk out of Nuts and Seeds,” or “Spoon Carving”) to the practical (the simply-titled “Time Management”).

On December 15, the City of Boston will honor comedian Steven Wright will be honored as the first inductee into the Boston Comedy Hall of Fame.

"It was a unanimous choice," says City Councilor John Tobin of the City's decision to make Wright the inaugural honoree. “He showed another path for Boston comedians, outside of the clubs.
