Get Scarce

Off the Couch
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX STAFF  |  October 21, 2009

On THURSDAY (the 22nd), Elese Morrone leads local alt-rock quartet For The Love Of Sloane to Mustang Sally’s . . . er, JR’s Bourbon Street Rock Club inside Mardi Gras (401.463.3080), and on FRIDAY (the 23rd), Lupo’s (401.331.5876) hosts a Partisan Records showcase including Paleo, Dolorean, and, of course, the road-weary, ever-entertaining Deer Tick crew (hey Mr. McCauley, what up with leaving “Easy” off the FooFest setlist?); admission is $15 at the door. AS220 (401.831.9327) offers one of many solid options SATURDAY (the 24th), when Lolita Black decimates Empire Street with fellow RIers Kintaan; Know Nothing and Whitey round out the bill, all for only a fin at the door. Local kids Starting Over Tuesday open for a special Hot Rod Circuit acoustic set along with New Haven’s The Queen Killing Kings at Club Hell. Pawtucket-bred rap showmen Chachi and DJ Therion perform at Firehouse 13, benefiting Chachi’s Pee Wee football squad. Doors at 7 pm, call 401.270.1801 for details. Sugar Ray & the Bluetones (featuring former Roomful frontman Ray Norcia) bring their top-shelf blues to the Knickerbocker Cafe in Westerly, call 401.596.4225.  And local vets Blizzard of ‘78 will Rock the Plaza at Patriot Place Saturday at 2 pm (no cover) before a late-night slot at T.T. The Bear’s in Cambridge. On SUNDAY (the 25th), Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket (401.475.2655) presents local sonic mindfuckers Bellows, with New Yorkers Little Women, the Psychic Paramount, and more, and Cat’s in Pawtucket) deserves a shout for hosting alt-legends Scarce (iTunes is now stocked with Scarce material) along with Cali power-popsters End Transmission, call 401.722.0150 for ticket info. And there’s some quality dreamo-pop cooing into Club Hell on WEDNESDAY (the 28th) with Seattle’s Throw Me The Statue and acoustic Brooklyn crooners Bishop Allen. And make sure to hit two benefits for Dan Tanner, the beloved DJ/skater/good guy who is recovering from severe injuries after being hit by a car last month. On Friday, AS220 hosts Bonestorm, Riff Cannon, the Empire Shall Fall, and Mast (9 pm, $6), and on THURSDAY (the 29th), Lightning Bolt, Tinsel Teeth, Human Beast, Russian Tsarlag, Talk Normal, and the Midnight Mongo Sound System will team up at Firehouse 13 at 8 pm ($7). We recommend getting in line early for that one.
