• Looks like MARIE STELLA are calling it quits. This past weekend's gig at the Empire was billed as "one of our last shows." Bummer. We were pretty into their girl-fronted indie-pop thing.
• Similarly, the excellent pop-punk SOPHOMORE BEAT have got a goodbye party planned for August 12 at the Deering Grange. Bummer. We were pretty into their sneering, cynically upbeat thing.
• In the not-calling-it-quits department, DEAN FORD has put the polish on a new two-song EP (single?) called Control, which will be released August 2, the same night he'll be busting out the entirety of Purple Rain. Get ready for some serious glam.

Those who recall the work of PETER DONOVAN — who fronted the punchy, sour-luck rock and roll of ALL THE REAL GIRLS until the band's hiatus in 2009 — would be keen to know this: Donovan himself has spent the summer acting in an independent film (titled LOST ON PURPOSE ) about some guys finding themselves on a dairy farm.

- From solid to standout
Maybe the most surprising thing about Portland indie band Brenda’s set at the Wilco-curated Solid Sound Festival on the Mass MoCA campus in North Adams, Massachusetts, on Saturday was that people were actually there to see it. Lots of them.
