Review: I Don't Know How She Does It

Having it all

Sarah Jessica Parker plays a Boston investment manager — not a baker or a caterer — in a this movie by Douglas McGrath (Emma) that's otherwise as retro as a Katherine Heigl chick flick. An often on-the-road mother of two who smushes a store-bought pie into a Pyrex for a bake sale, Kate doesn't really "do it," but she does freeze the action and break the fourth wall, while her admiring best friend (Christina Hendricks), all-business associate (Olivia Munn), office nemesis (Seth Meyers), and a stay-at-home "momster" (Busy Philipps) appear to be talking to a documentary crew. Kate's hair may be messy and her blouse untucked, but a dashing colleague in New York (Pierce Brosnan) falls for her anyway. "Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman," concludes Kate, who ends up having it all on her own terms, while we're left wondering why her nice husband (Greg Kinnear) can't smush a pie for the bake sale — or make breakfast, or take the kids to school.
