Beatfest

Let’s twist again
By CHRIS NELSON  |  September 18, 2006

Muse
If them old changing-weather blues got you longing to twist again like you did last summer, just download some of these dance-floor alternatives (suitable for headphone listening) and let your toes do the tapping.

Sebastian,“Ross Ross Ross”
Okay, so it starts out like a Wolf Eyes track, but ask any Parisian hipster what he’s smoking to at the discothèque and he’ll point you in the direction of young French producer Sebastian and his home label, Ed Banger Records. By diluting some harsh electronics with insanely danceable beats, acts like Sebastian and label mates Justice have created their own trashy and fashionable æsthetic that’s just as chic as anything on the catwalk.

Cham, “Ghetto Story Remix (feat. Akon)”
Hard to believe that anything could be added to Baby Cham’s summer sleeper hit, but Senegalese crooner Akon puts a spine-tingling curve on the happiest song about living in the ghetto since the Good Times theme.

Muse, “Supermassive Black Hole (Phones Remix)”
Not content with remixing every dance-punk band NME has drooled over in the past three years (Bloc Party, Futureheads, etc.), Phones (a/k/a producer Paul Epworth) had to go and turn the latest single from British mope-rockers Muse into a falsetto-laden club-ready beatfest. Even if it’s not likely to be topping DJ charts, that kind of crossbreeding always puts a smile on this jaded hipster’s face.
