No Eden

The story is too familiar
By GERALD PEARY  |  November 19, 2008

EDEN-INSIDE.jpg

There's a utopian pastoral painting on the wall of Billy and Breda Farrell's bedroom, but their actual marriage is no Eden.

Billy (Aidan Kelly) has the 40ish alienated itch, spending his nights pub-crawling in his little Irish town and lusting after young women. Breda (Eileen Walsh) sits home minding the three children and wondering where love has gone as the Farrells approach their shaky 10th anniversary.

The lead actors are sensitive and persuasive, but the story, directed by Declan Recks, is too familiar, and Eugene O'Brien's script can't quite hide that it's taken from his play, a throwback to Angry Young Men British dramas of the 1950s and '60s.
