Just not soapy enough

La Mujer de Mi Hermano

This silly would-be soap opera directed by Ricardo de Montreuil takes a steamy premise and drains all the fun out of it. Zoe (the beautiful but vapid Bárbara Mori) is stuck in a passionless, childless (he’s shooting blanks) marriage to Ignacio, so she starts up an affair with his spoiled brother Gonzalo. Her motivations are never clear, since she maintains the same blank expression throughout, and Gonzalo is such an obnoxious narcissist, you can’t imagine it’s got anything to do with him. He has his own reasons for wanting to stick it to his brother; they don’t make much sense, but by the time the revelation comes, you’ll just be glad you’re finally getting somewhere. Watching beautiful people suffer has a certain allure; rather than wallow in it, though, everybody tries to rise above it, and what should be soapy fun is tarnished by the taint of class.
