[sunday in somerville] Davis Square Theatre announces its rock and roll kickoff party

Earlier this month, thanks to a sweet scoop by our own Eugenia Williamson, we told you about the impending arrival of the DAVIS SQUARE THEATRE in Somerville. And right on schedule, the newest rock club in the area has announced its first show.

Curated by MOUNT PERU'S Mary Flatley, the gates of the famed theater (re)open this Sunday, March 4 with performances by MICHAEL J. EPSTEIN MEMORIAL LIBRARY, THE WRONG SHAPES, RUBE ROSE FOX, and DJ sets by BRIAN CRICKETS of Mount Peru and perhaps Boston's last remaining true gentleman, CARL MELLO of HALSTON and MUSCLEMILK!!

This opening comes at a good time. With the uncertainty around the nearby Rosebud Diner and apparent quests to magically spin it into a Tasty Burger, a proper rock club is much needed in the Davis neighborhood. This new space, formerly the site of Jimmy Tingle's Off Broadway Theater, is a 200-person capacity club with full bar and 1am liquor license, and designs on entertainment several nights a week.

According to Williamson's February 6 report, the Davis Square Theater will feature a mixed use of theater (naturally), burlesque, performance, and live music, and is owned by Ken Kelly and David Flanagan, the proprietors of Davis Square's Saloon and the Foundry, as well as Somerville mainstays the Independent and Precinct. The latter has teamed with last year's new kid on the block, Radio, and PA's Lounge in making Somerville's Union Square a hotspot for live rock and roll. 

Though no other shows have yet to be announced, other bands that are said to be performing at the club in coming weeks include BISCUITS AND GRAVY, MICHAEL BERNIER AND THE UPRISING, LOVE IN STOCKHOLM, and THE DOCTOR DOOM ORCHESTRA.
