Davis Square rock club shuffle: is the Rosebud Diner becoming a Tasty Burger?
The Boston Rock Club gods giveth, and then they taketh away. Especially in Somerville.
On Monday we broke news that the DAVIS SQUARE THEATER was coming to town, taking over the old Jimmy Tingle Off Broadway location with plans for a 200-person room prepared by the proprietors of nearby Foundry and Saloon, as well as Union Square's Precinct and the Independent. We didn't specifically mention it in our blog post, but we were thinking about how this would impact the recent slate of local shows put on by the ROSEBUD DINER's back room bar and grille.
Well, there might not be much of a conflict, after all. Grub Street this morning is reporting that the historic Rosebud site might soon become a Tasty Burger, a burger joint that currently has a location in the Fenway (we here at the Phoenix kinda love it, and TD from Big Digits tends bar there!).
Plans include swallowing up the back room of the Rosebud, the site of its local rock and roll shows the past few years. We can't imagine Tasty Burger having live performances -- although that'd be pretty cool. From the Grub:
The Rosebud Diner, the old-school diner that looks better than it tastes, might soon become the suburban outpost of Tasty Burger. We'd wondered if Tasty was going to move right next to the Boston Burger Company and launch some kind of patty-throwdown, but this location will allow Davis denizens to get burger fixes on either end of the square.
According to Davis Square's Livejournal, Brandon Wilson from the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission says that Tasty Burger is negotiating to buy the Rosebud Diner and the Bar and Grille behind it, combining the two to make one Tasty restaurant.
Grub Street goes on to note the historic-site hurdles such a takeover would entail, so who knows if this will gain much traction. But the Rosebud had lost some of its momentum after the venue's booking agents, Aimee McGrath and Josh Banville, left the room a few months ago and opened Radio across town in Union Square. So who knows?
Upcoming notable show at the Rosebud include NEMES + RADIO ASTRONOMER + SELF-PROCLAIMED ROCKSTARS + THE TORN SHORTS this Friday, February 10, SUGAR SNOW + I, PISTOL + AIRPORT on Thursday, March 1, and THICK SHAKES + HANDS & KNEES + RADIO CONTROL on Cinco de Mayo.
The Rosebud's website, which features its live music calendar, has its full schedule.
