Free Mp3 of the day: Wheat

Three years between releases is nothing if you're, I dunno, Nine Inch Nails, but in indie rock it's a couple of generations. It's been that long since WHEAT released their quietly ambitious disc Hope and Adams -- and more than a decade after Medeiros made them cryptic, out-of-nowhere local faves. But this week they're back with a new one, White Ink, Black Ink; they're celebrating the release of the disc August 1 at Great Scott. When we caught them a couple months back, we were struck by a) how well the old stuff holds up, and b) how adventurous the new stuff sounds. ("HOTT," a slick acronym for "Half of the Time," could be a remix, except it's the original.) They've been through phases involving laptops but have held onto only those sublte technical innovations that enhance what's become an increasingly warm (dare we say soulful?) catologue.

Check out two songs from the new record below, plus the video from first-single "Changes Is" above; it was directed by friend-of-OTD Mike Gill, who's graduated from lensing clips for Andrew WK and Damone to big-timing documentaries and whatnot.Grab the songs below and check out the show -- yes, we're aware you're all much more interested in our free BEST POLL CONCERT that same night with the Bravery, Passion Pit, Metric, and others at City Hall Plaza, but should you be in need of an afterparty, now you got one.

Great feature, great downloads but rubbish facts! Wheat's last release was "Everyday I Said a Prayer for Kathy and Made a One Inch Square" which was released 2 years ago,  "Hope and Adams" is now 10 years old
