Rare Frequencies: Whole lot of Nothing

The twin clarinet duo the INTERNATIONAL NOTHING are really something. KAI FAGASCHINSKI and MICHAEL THIEKE, two of Berlin’s most interesting experimental musicians, have been performing together as a duo for almost eight years now. At times, the blending of the soft airy sound of their reeds is nothing short of sublime — it’s this close to melodic, almost songlike. The two instruments often sound like one otherworldly, multiphonic vessel. This will be the International Nothing’s Boston debut, and from what I’ve heard from those who’ve seen them perform in Berlin, it’s not to be missed. They’ll joined on the bill by the always entertaining, noisy improvisational men-about-town, the EPICUREANS, with Dave Gross on saxophone, Ricardo Donoso on percussion, and Ryan McGuire on bass.

Most noise bands have brief shelf lives; local trio HEATHEN SHAME, however, are an exception. For the past 10 years, the twin- guitar-and-trumpet trio of WAYNE ROGERS, KATE BIGGAR, and GREG KELLEY have played some of the most exhilarating (and loud) live sets you’d ever want to experience. This Friday they’ll unleash ecstatic hellfire at the Oxfam Café at Tufts. Also on the bill are two of Providence’s more enjoyable noisemakers, the trio WHITE MICE (complete with mice masks and lab coats) and veteran noise artist DIAGRAM A.

Rare Frequencies: Barrage a trois
Published 6/3/2009 by Susanna Bolle

They say good things come in threes. That’s certainly the case with releases on Boston’s own Intransitive Recordings. Specializing in experimental music, noise, and sound art, the label has released some tremendous CDs over the years by acts like NERVE NET NOISE, BRENDAN MURRAY, and KAPOTTE MUZIEK, pretty much always in groups of three.

This month, label head Howard Stelzer unleashes a new batch of recordings by an international array of experimental music luminaries and cult figures (in law enforcement, no less) from the outer reaches and beyond. After the jump, some MP3s to give you a sense of what’s happening on one of New England’s most adventurous record labels.
