Amy Bishop and John Irving: newsworthy?

Over at Universal Hub, Ron Newman argues that the Globe's latest Amy Bishop scoop--which details the accused murderer's familial relationship to whimsical novelist John Irving--is proof that the paper's coverage of the Bishop affair has jumped the shark, as they say.

That strikes me as overly harsh. After all, in today's Globe, we learned (among other things) that Bishop apparently threatened a police officer with a gun after shooting her brother years ago, which is a pretty remarkable and relevant detail.

Even if the Globe is still going strong on Bishop, though, I'm not sure her relationship to everyone's favorite chronicler of boarding schools/Vienna/wrestling/bears is all that meaningful. (Unlike, say, her love of Dungeons & Dragons.)

I for one couldn't care less that Amy Bishop is a second cousin to John Irving, but the same piece has me intrigued by her apparent fascination with "The Troubles" of Northern Ireland. I'd like to hear more on that, as I'm sure many in the large Boston Irish diaspora would.  Paging Kevin Cullen.

Good point, Fish. If there is anyone with an appreciation for a longstanding grudge, it would appear to be Ms. Bishop.
