Boston's Rap Class of 2011

A slice of area hip-hop's diverse scene — from hardcore boom-bap to frat rap
By ERIN BALDASSARI  |  September 29, 2011

>> MEETVirtue and Emoh's video director, Nick Heller <<

• DJ Emoh Betta is straight edge and vegan, lanky with long, tattooed arms. He looks more like a bike messenger than a hip-hop artist. Then there's Virtue, a bespectacled Canadian transplant who dropped his first album at the age of 13 and who swears that he can't remember a world in which he wasn't always writing.

Together they comprise one sect of the Fameless Fam collective, an amorphous and transient group in which members pair off for eclectic projects. Following traditions set by the legendary underground imprint Anticon — whose diverse roster is scattered from Maine to California — Fameless is currently striving to remain united now that some teammates have left Boston.

"It's weird performing without [Fameless Fam crooner] Danny [Joseph]," says Virtue, who, along with video director Nick Heller, makes up what he calls "one big production company." "But we won't stop moving forward with our careers — we've been sending each other tracks and working remotely."
