One constant through the turnover and evolution has been producer Kurt Ballou of Converge, who has recorded all of Trap Them's releases at his Godcity Studios in Salem. And there's more to the Converge connection: Trap Them were on singer Jacob Bannon's Deathwish Incorporated label before signing their current deal with Prosthetic in 2009. Yet the current tour, which hits the Middle East downstairs this Sunday, marks Trap Them's first time on the road with their long-time friends. "It just somehow never happened," says McKenney, laughing. "I don't know what we're going to do after that. We've already played with so many great bands we wanted to play with."
So, consider the current tour is a sort of victory lap for Trap Them. Making the leap to the same stratum as Converge seems inevitable.

- Kylesa tell a simpler story
Savannah crust-metal collective Kylesa have opted to keep the mythic in the music alone, searing ears with a widescreen two-drummer assault that's both pummeling and haunting.
- Matt Pike and High on Fire sludge forward
There are, really, just two types of rock legends: those who try hard to find the rocker within them, and those who are born rockers.
- Making sense of Contrast Eats the Slimey Green
That Two series at the Port City is great for plenty of reasons — including the cheap beer, obviously — but that gig a couple Tuesdays back with Metal Feathers opening for Spouse on the big stage pretty much justifies the whole endeavor.

- Against Me! survive the major labels ... barely
Against Me! played the best rock show I've ever seen. This was almost seven years ago at Jackson Mann K-8 School in Allston, for a capacity crowd of about 300 people. Or maybe closer to 600. Or maybe fewer. I didn't take a head count.
- DevilDriver | Beast
Would it be blasphemous to compare DevilDriver with the almighty Pantera? Sure, perhaps. But the only reference for the bludgeoning brutality of Beast is the latter days of the Texas-based metal militants and their pushing of the envelope into breakneck energy, aggression, and power
- A Deathwish comes true
If you've lived in Boston for more than a few months, you've surely felt the pang of "Whoa" that runs up and down your spine the first time you see their trucks: huge black-and-gold behemoths stocked with intimidatingly jacked dudes all dressed in black, blazing down the street like Mongol hordes on the rampage.

- Down in the folk trenches with the Old Edison
In a messy Allston kitchen, in unison, a mob of about 20 or 30 persons start screaming at the Old Edison. And as is their custom, the Old Edison shout right back. Welcome to a typical Old Edison performance, but please watch your step.
