Things I did not expect to hear at the Superchunk show: a heartfelt tribute to Buffalo Tom. Sure enough, though, Mac McCaughan was up there talking about how back in the 90s, Superchunk had aspired to a "Buffalo Tom-like intensity." With all due respect to the (underrated) BuffTom, I'd say they surpassed that particular yardstick long ago.

Live tonight: Superchunk at the Royale

So Pavement may have induced widespread fanboyish giddiness last Saturday in Boston (and is currently doing the same in New York this week - and on Comedy Central!). And something similar will probably happen at November's Guided by Voices show. But the best current 90s revival act is probably neither of the above: it's Superchunk, who play the Royale tonight.
