MORE ABOUT PATTY GIURLEO
Patty Giurleo's songwriting style has been described by Brett Milano of the Boston Phoenix as "an occasional vocal resemblance to Joni Mitchell, and a preference for the floating, not-quite-pretty kind of tunes that Mitchell wrote in her post-waif, pre-jazz period."
Giurleo recently released her sophomore CD, entitled Ensemble. The nine-song CD takes a turn in a jazzier direction, featuring her rhythm section (whom she's been playing with over three years) and guest performances by Dan McLoughlin (Fender Rhodes), Noah Maltsberger (lead electric/acoustic) and Timo Shanko (tenor sax).
In 1994, Patty emerged as a singer-songwriter, releasing a two-track live recording on 7" vinyl (Mag Wheel Records). The EP attracted some media attention, like reviews in Musician Magazine (top ten list of unsigned artists) and Spin.
In 1998, Patty recorded Longtime, released on the Cambridge indy label 449 Records. The debut CD was recorded at Fort Apache in Cambridge with the help of bassist/engineer Dan McLoughlin and drummer Ryan McMillan, both of The Push Stars.
The debut release of Longtime put Patty in the forefront of the Boston music scene, with a feature story on the cover of the Boston Phoenix Arts Section listing it as one of the year's best local records and a nomination for "Best New Local Act" in the WFNX/Phoenix Best Music Poll. Giurleo also appeared at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival as part of the New Artist Showcase in August 2000.
Patty has recently left Boston for the music-rich environment of New York City. She is currently enrolled at the New School, and is studying jazz. In her spare time, she continues to write and perform songs from her first two CDs, while incorporating a lush, new jazz sound.
