MORE ABOUT MARIA VENTURA
I’m now fifteen but I've been performing since I was nine. My first public show was at the old White Electric, playing guitar and singing three songs (one that I wrote myself) with the late, great Plymouth Rock. A couple of years later, when I was eleven, I got to play my first show in NYC (thanks to Cynthia Hopkins, who I met at an AS220 benefit) and later that year actually got to open for the amazing David Johansen at an outdoor music festival on the Lower East Side. He and I shared some Moxie together backstage! I was already a New York Dolls fan, so that was very exciting! When I was twelve I opened for Blue Man Group (got to see them transform from pink to blue, which was also very exciting) and played before my first (and only, so far) audience of more than a thousand people. I play some saxophone and can keep time on drums, but piano and especially guitar are my favorite instruments to play. I’ve been lucky to get lots of shows, mostly in Providence, but also in MA, NH and quite a few in NY. I like to play open mics everywhere I can. I recently recorded my first CD, at Machines with Magnets – it's called Tear Bird Train and has lots of great Providence musicians on it. All along since I started, the musicians in Providence have been unbelievably supportive, playing in my bands and helping me get shows and being very encouraging. It has really seemed like a dream come true sometimes, growing up playing music in this area. I used to do a mix of cover songs and originals written by me or my dad, but I do mostly my own songs now and almost have enough new ones for a second CD! My first band, when I was eleven, was The Vitatonics (with members of Plymouth Rock, Death Vessel and The Eyesores). Then I had a duet with Joel Thibodeau called The Hiccups – that was lots of fun and we played all over the place, once opening in NYC for Regina Spektor, who’s getting really famous now. My one and only punk band, The Prom Bombs, had Hilary Jones of The Sweethieves on lead guitar, Chris Saraullo on drums and Marcella Nova on bass. It's a good life! Like I said, the musicians in Providence are the most supportive and generous musicians in the world! After a four month break from singing because of a severe case of mononucleosis, I’m back singing again and it feels wonderful! Singing, music and friends are the most important things in my life. Writing songs and singing will always be a major part of my life and I hope to make songwriting and singing my career.
