"Ultimately, we're a pop group," says JiJi. "But we like to be different, and we want to incorporate everything. When we sing about message-y stuff like, you know, 'Be yourself' or 'Chase that dream,' it's because that's what we actually do." And if the band's current achievements may seem to imply that they are primarily aiming at other kids, think again. Jillian: "We are well aware that if we have to perform in front of a bunch of 20- or 30-year-olds, it's going to be tough, but we make music that's danceable and fun. So, you know, even if the positive messages don't exactly work with that audience, the music is catchy enough so that it doesn't even matter."

"If you look at our iPods, there's everything, from theater to rock to pop to R&B to country to hip-hop," adds Simone. And a quick listen to the tracks the Girls are working on for 2011 confirms this pan-genre restlessness: there are songs that would work on modern country radio, songs with more of a dance or hip-hop swagger, and then straight-up pop songs like their current single, "Fairytale."

At this point, its clear that the Girls are just working maniacally hard, having fun, and willing to see what happens. "We're just trying to take over the world," JiJi declares, "one pair of ears at a time!"

  •   THE WORD FROM YANNI  |  April 06, 2011
We should all be so lucky as to live the Life of Yanni: While the rest of us concern ourselves with mundane day-to-day trials and tribulations wrapped within a greater shell of global anxiety, Yanni has been able to fashion a musical identity where he can pursue genre-defying instrumental music for the gratification of a dedicated worldwide following.
  •   SOUNDGARDEN'S CHRIS CORNELL COMES FULL CIRCLE  |  April 11, 2011
Rock bands, if they do it right, can become part of a greater societal movement, hitting the zeitgeist and hoovering up fans like power-mad demons, subversive priests at the altar of the counterculture.
  •   AMON AMARTH | SURTUR RISING  |  April 06, 2011
Every hessian band duder ever will tell you that the new album is the same as the previous one, only heavier and more brutal. And even if that's true, it's hard to pull off in real life, where the will to be heavy often leads to riffage that is shrill and speedy or, worse, deadeningly uninventive.
  •   BRITNEY SPEARS | FEMME FATALE  |  March 30, 2011
To fans and detractors alike, Britney Spears is less a flesh-and-blood human being than an abstraction, an ideal, a pagan icon, a symbol of innocent temptation and not-quite-articulated desires.
  •   WIRE MAINTAIN A SHARPNESS THROUGH EVOLUTION  |  March 31, 2011
What is "talent" in music? If we agree that it's about something more than just technical skill, then perhaps part of the definition involves a musician's ability to ferret out his or her own particular (or peculiar) talents.
