Bagel Rising’s Goldy’s Delicious Smoked Fish Sandwich

Anyone who grew up in a Jewish family likely shares two characteristics: a hearty appetite and a natural affinity for smoked fish. With these two certainties, however, comes an equally natural dilemma: when not attending a Bar Mitzvah brunch or a break-the-fast feast, at which the platters of pickled herring, kippered salmon, and smoked salmon and whitefish salad seem bottomless, how does one choose a fish on which to feast?

On the Goldy’s Delicious Smoked Fish Sandwich at Bagel Rising, between halves of toasted bagels, both the tender slabs of Nova Scotia salmon and the mounds of mayonnaise-y smoked whitefish are delicious — especially when accented by rounds of ripe tomatoes, sweet onion rings, a few salty capers, and a good schmeer of cream cheese. Why Bagel Rising is one of the few local spots to layer both fishes into one sandwich is perplexing. However it got here, though, is a secondary matter. To anyone who’s agonized over delicatessen and bagel-shop menus, your dilemma ends with one bite of a Goldy’s sandwich. All you have to do now is get in line.

Available for $5.65 at Bagel Rising, 1243 Comm Ave, Allston | 617.789.4000.

Much like the pottery studio on the Station Street block in Brookline Village, Kookoo is practically imperceptible to the average passerby. In fact, were it not for the chalkboard easel of menu items out front on the sidewalk, you could easily miss it — but your loss would be considerable.
