JOHN MARIN: MODERNISM AT MIDCENTURY | Addison Gallery | January 27–April 1 | Marin was a leading figure in Alfred Stieglitz's circle of pioneering early-20th century American modernists. Local independent curator Debra Balken explores his late work, assembling 60 watercolors and oil paintings from the 1930s through his death in '53 that reveal how Marin channeled the kinetic energy of the rising New York skyline and Maine's churning coast.
