Tilting at Windows

Maybe, I suggest, there's just too much else for people to worry about these days? "I don't want to compete," he says. "I'm not going to say that free software is more important than stopping global warming. But they're all related. Because they all have to do with re-establishing freedom and democracy."

I ask Stallman if he's optimistic. Surprisingly for a man with such ironclad convictions, he says no: the corporations just have too much of a stranglehold on government and society.

But "if we fight," he says, "at least there's a chance we might win."
