Maybe, I suggest, there's just too much else for people to worry about these days? "I don't want to compete," he says. "I'm not going to say that free software is more important than stopping global warming. But they're all related. Because they all have to do with re-establishing freedom and democracy."

I ask Stallman if he's optimistic. Surprisingly for a man with such ironclad convictions, he says no: the corporations just have too much of a stranglehold on government and society.

But "if we fight," he says, "at least there's a chance we might win."

The Rhode Island recession, among the worst in the country, has become something of a national curiosity: how could such a little state be in such big trouble?

This past Earth Day, President Barack Obama, speaking at an Iowa wind-turbine factory, delivered a gusty peroration. "The nation that leads the world in creating new energy sources will be the nation that leads the 21st-century global economy," he said. "America can be that nation. America must be that nation."

I'm happy to be experiencing first-hand what many agree is the single most-important step in the fight against global warming: eco-friendly building upgrades and weatherization.
