One Wrecking Ball Minimum: All Asia Cafe closing?
All Asia Cafe, Cambridge's home to such performances as Ryanhood tearing shit up back in 2004 (as pictured above), we hardly knew ya.
Well, we kinda did, actually, but it was via the view from Mass Ave as we walked back and forth from Middlesex to Sandman Square. Still, always sad to lose a live music venue, as according to this article from MIT's The Tech newspaper, All Asia will fall victim to a proposed University Park expansion that will swallow up a row of buildings, also including the Cambridgeport Saloon. The deets:
The new MIT/Forest City building will be a five-story, approximately 240,000 square foot building... The building will extend along Mass Ave. from the former Cambridgeport Saloon through the All Asia restaurant. It will extend a block down Blanche Street, from Mass Ave. to Green Street, and then approximately halfway down Green Street. Random Hall, which extends from 282 to 290 Mass Ave, will not be affected by the development. Existing buildings will be demolished, including Thailand Cafe, All Asia, J.N. Philips Auto Glass, and MIT building NW62 (the Volvo Garage).
The article states that construction will begin as early as this time next year, so rest assured, this weekend's Polkfest 4 is safe... for now.
