Flo's Clam Shack

Their chowder is "Rhode Island style" sea soup (which they spell like we say, "chowda") and their fried clams are the kind you get greedy about — petty about, actually: "No son, that last one is for dad. You finish your grilled cheese and get out of here." Of course, there's the location as well. Doing business across from the splendor of Newport's First Beach is a smart aesthetic move (don't forget the shack's location on Park Avenue in Portsmouth). Factor in the amiable kitsch, the smell of the ocean, and the seven-decade history, and we're wondering why we're not there right now . . . .
