You don’t know why you never thought to make it at home. If the banana bread French toast at the MESA CAFÉ AND GRILL doesn’t make you slap your forehead and go Duh!, nothing will. Cook/proprietor Ismael Loeza likes to please the kids by making their pancakes with cute little Mickey Mouse ears, but his main breakfast and brunch energy is directed at grown-up appetites. He likes to prepare variations on eggs Benedict, for example, such as “Soprano’s Bennies,” with butterflied Italian sausage, and his signature “Mesa’s Bennies” has the poached eggs over corned beef hash, topped with pico de gallo. He makes everything from scratch, from cinnamon buns to — no kidding — potato chips.
