Best Dive Bar Veal Parm

The Whalen

While many of the dive bars along Warwick’s West Shore loop have closed (Copperfield’s, the Backstop, et al), family-owed watering hole THE WHALEN remains, luckily unscathed after a fire burned down the neighboring (and ancient) Wildes Corner strip mall. The interior design remains unchanged (think Moe’s Tavern), including a carpet Samuel Gorton himself may have installed. So who would ever assume that this place would have consistently good fare at 1980s prices in a well-kept kitchen? Six tasty clam cakes with a bowl of homemade white chowder (not too thick with plenty of clams) for only $5. Grilled cheese with fries and slaw for under a fin, clubs and pastrami melts, and expertly-fried fish and chips for under $7. But the big story is the veal parm, as a grinder (with fries, also in the $7 range) or full plate with pasta for less than 10 bucks. Homemade marinara and real-deal veal.
