Best Version Of A ‘Same-Ol’ ’ Dish

European Café

Hummus? Is it possible to be delightfully surprised by hummus? Geez. Sometimes, especially for non-vegetarians, it's not easy to differentiate it from a gardener's well-prepared humus. Well, at the EUROPEAN CAFÉ, you're in for a surprise. The mashed chickpea pita dip strikes the perfect notes of lemon tang, olive oil lushness, garlic zing, and sesame snap of tahini, plus a secret seasoning flourish or two. Despite the name of the bistro, the specialties here are Italian and Greek, thus the authenticity behind this Middle Eastern standard. So it's not surprising that such items as their Middle Eastern dipping plate and Greek mezza platter would be winners as well. That last item is filling enough to be a meal in itself. Even the stuffed grape leaves are hearty, containing plenty of ground beef as well as the usual rice. 645 Douglas Pike (Route 7), Smithfield | 401.349.4200 |
