Last year the Food Network’s hit show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives gave props to EVELYN’S DRIVE-IN in Tiverton, with NoCal native Guy Fieri stuffing his giant frosted-blonde mug with Lobster Chow Mein (a house special, complete with gravy and crispy noodles) and fried clam bellies while trying to figure out what the hell a clam cake is. Evelyn’s just opened for the season, and you best believe we’ll be heading south along Route 77 for a bowl of their Rhody chowder, a coupla stuffies, and a sumptuous lobster roll. The description defies local logic, offering the choice of warm butter or mayo on the side. (Mayo on the side? Hallelujah, a lobsta roll not drowning in mayo!) In fact, the Evelyn’s version presents fresh hunks of lobster (not the shredded shrapnel) on a butter-grilled roll — and nothing more. The dining room (with full bar) and picnic area overlooking Nanaquaket Pond (arrive by boat and tie up on the dock) provide a tranquil setting amidst the madness of the takeout window out back.
