How about a trip to Milan? Proprietor Gianni Spinazzola spared no expense outfitting his coffee spot like one in his sophisticated native city, from the mahogany and steel café tables and chairs to the crystal chandelier and towering bird of paradise floral display seen on a recent visit. Unfortunately named the PODHEAD CAFÉ, there’s no telling how many potential customers hastily reading the sign have come in expecting some exotic herb in their brownies or biscotti or gelato. The specialties of the house, though, are 11 specific varietal espressos, listed like single-malt Scotches. Each cup is prepared from those single-serving vacuum-packed-for-freshness filter pods, varying from winy Kenya AA to nutty Brasil-Santos or — for a premium price — the bright and low-acid Jamaica Blue Mountain. For an espresso place, though, their regular coffees are pretty weak.
