Best Tastes of the D.R. via South Prov

Carolina Market Restaurant

CAROLINA MARKET RESTAURANT is a Dominican diamond in the rough situated in the heart of south Providence. The blue-collar patrons fill the doorway and small dining room at lunchtime, eager for a taste of au¬thentic eats. The star attraction during the lunch rush has to be the Styrofoam container of beans, rice, and beef — the “extra small” size is only $3.50 and could feed two, and another buck pretty much doubles the portion. The yellow rice is fluffy, the black beans are savory, and the tender beef can only be described as mom’s pot roast, only better. There are plenty of dollar snacks too, from various meat pies and morcilla (blood pudding) to sweet plantains and a small knish-type potato ball called relleno de papas. There’s tripe soup with rice or yucca, a whole roasted chicken with a large side for only $12, and specialty platters include shrimp in garlic sauce with salad, beans, and plantains.
