Ordinarily, you don’t hear the use of “honey” as an honorific up here in Yankee territory unless someone is talking to a small child or an elderly person or possibly a relative. But THAI ORCHID co-owner Suchitra Pukkum, as she serves bottomless cups of green tea or any of the wonderful dishes cooked up by her and husband Matee, punctuates her comments to customers with “honey” as naturally as if she’d known you all her life. Unfortunately, most of us didn’t grow up with chicken satay or pad Thai, with tom kah gai soup (chicken broth, coconut milk, and lime juice-based), or pik pow sauce. But that doesn’t inhibit our enjoyment of these delicious Thai items at Thai Orchid, along with many other Asian dishes. To top it off, Matee’s mother makes the Thai coconut custard, keeping it all in the family.
