We’ve been to the moon and Mars but still can’t figure out the proper solution to transport fried food. So just how does the calamari from MACERA’S SOUP AND SAUCE remain crunchy in its steam-inducing Styrofoam vessel? The calamari rings are not doused in batter nor coated in gritty cornmeal, yet always retain that perfect textural contrast (tender squid to crunchy exterior) long after arriving back home, and without frantically jabbing holes through the lid on the way. Macera’s is way off the radar yet well worth the drive, out of sight yet easy to find along Oaklawn Avenue. Rhode Island has cornered the calamari game, and we could seriously spark some civil unrest in proclaiming Macera’s squid rings as the best (we hear you barking, Twin Oaks), but it’s pretty damn close.
