GILDA’S ITALIAN RESTAURANT, near the Johnston/Providence line, is a relative newcomer, but here’s hoping that Jo-Ann Benedetti and her staff will stick it out because the dimly-lit spot deserves some attention, particularly for their Chicken Escarole recipe. An unusually dark stock provides maximum flavor, and an abundance of carrots accompany the tender escarole and endless spoonfuls of shredded chicken, all of which will knock the socks off of that flu bug. A large bowl to go (pretty much a quart) with a hunk of bread is only $3. The crew can feast in here: five bucks for an order of stuffed mushrooms, a platter of linguine aglio with chicken for $7 (including soup or salad), five baked stuffed shrimp for $10.95, etc. The parm grinder or your choice (meatball, chicken, or veal) with a heaping side of fries for $5 is reason enough to stop by.
