Best Best Use of Magic

Although they didn’t exactly snap their fingers, the folks at Mixed Magic Theatre have worked wonders with a storefront space in the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center building across from Slater Mill. Directors Ricardo and Bernadet Pitts-Wiley have come full circle to running a theater together, from the Art Ship Project on Richmond Street in Providence in the early ’80s to venues around the state — one an open-air stage next to the beach in North Kingstown, still used for summer Shakespeare productions. But in their new space, they’ve already presented two successful shows ( Driving Miss Daisy and Waiting for Bessie Smith ), instituted a Sunday evening spoken word event (“Poets and Players”), and have much more in the works — The Moby Dick Project , a retelling of Melville’s story, May 11 through 13; The Taming of the Shrew , July 28 through 30 and August 11 through 20; Life’s a Dream , October 12 through 29; and Celebrations: An African Odyssey , November 30 through December 10. 171 Main Street, Pawtucket | 401.475.6675 | www.mixedmagictheatre.org
