Best Best Craft with a Conscience
Since 1984, under the aegis of the ARC of Blackstone Valley, an organization called Flying Shuttles has provided technical and artistic training for adults with developmental disabilities. In 1997, the Flying Shuttles Studio opened a gallery and studio space to support the creative potential of such individuals. So-called rag rugs are the signature pieces at the studio and give it its name. Instead of rags, however, these start with designer fabrics cut into strips. Then the strips are stitched together, rolled onto shuttles, and beaten down into colorful cotton rugs with bound ends. The rugs come in three sizes, with patterns varying endlessly with the permutations of strip placement. Table runners and placemats are made in the same manner. The studio also sells bead jewelry, note cards, and paintings by its members. Open Monday and Thursday from 9 am to 3 pm and on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday till 5 pm.
