Governor LePage is focused on making deep cuts to the state's budget (see "Down Again," by Al Diamon, April 1). So much so, that he is willing to bring the government to a halt. It is certainly difficult to criticize his determination.
Given LePage's strong beliefs about the importance of reducing state payroll costs, I assume he will be taking a voluntary pay cut himself. In fact, to show his resolve, his reduction could be more significant than anyone else's. After all, he is living for free in a state building. He doesn't have to pay a mortgage or rent, or for his own transportation, food, electricity, telephone, bodyguards, or many of the other necessities for which the rest of us use our paychecks.
Naturally, LePage's daughter will also be taking a pay cut. Like her father, she has very little to pay for, since the state is footing most of her bills. These reductions wouldn't fix our money problems, but they would help. And, as with most politicians, I know Governor LePage took this job to help.
So, governor, while you are taking a vacation after barely three months in your new job, perhaps you will consider my proposal. Those of us back here in Maine eagerly await your response.
