Shake some action

Off the Couch
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  January 5, 2010

Acclaimed folk/Celtic duo (and Foster's own) ATWATER-DONNELLY visit the Newport Blues Cafe on THURSDAY (the 7th), performing two sets with CT guests JOHN & HEIDI CERRIGIONE, call 401.841.5510. Slightly louder action at Firehouse 13 (401.270.1801) with Woonsocket's grimy garage-metal specialists HAYWORTH, headlining the CD release party (I Now Pronounce You Fucked and Depressed — nice) with THE SHARPEST, Worcester's GOLDEN GIRLS, and plenty more for $7 at the door. Jerky's Bar (401.621.2244) is the place to be on FRIDAY (the 8th) for veteran Wu-Tang wordsmith GZA (Words From the Genius dropped 19 years ago? Jesus, I feel old). The show is 18+ with limited tickets remaining; local greats JAHPAN and SYMMETRY (with live band in tow) kick it off. At the Greenwich Hotel (401.884.4200), MIKE G. & THE ASSOCIATES bring the barroom rock free of charge, and the 201 Club (a welcome addition to the live circuit) hosts local experi-metal heads HOLLOWS, THE BUTCHERINGS, and BONESTORM, with DJ TY JESSO spinning, call 401.454.4581. A busy weekend at AS220 includes local psych-sludge rockers KINTAAN, KOKOMO, and HEAD OF HORNS, with Minnesota hippies MOONSTONE on SATURDAY (the 9th), followed by a CD release party for RUMRUNNERS on SUNDAY (the 10th), with fellow locals (R)OCTUPUS (featuring members of A Troop of Echoes) and THE UNIVERSES; call 401.831.9327 for info on both shows. Club Hell keeps the week going with an all-ages tilt featuring OUT OF THE BLUE, local "emo-tronic" kids SHE'S A ROBOT, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, and Attleboro's COOKS INC. on MONDAY (the 11th), followed by NYC's SEX SLAVES with HATE IN THE BOX, GUNFIRE 76, and East Provy's VAGORA on TUESDAY (the 12th); doors at 7 pm for both shows, call 401.709.3923.
