Off the Couch
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX STAFF  |  September 8, 2009

A pair of solid freebies start the weekend right; on THURSDAY (the 10th), THE KILLDEVILS plug in and bring the blues to Nick-a-Nee's (401.861.7290), while GAMBLIN' HANDS, DENNIS EMSLEY, and FRANK MARTYN team up as the house band at the Greenwich Hotel (401.884.4200); the show is 21+ and never a cover. On FRDAY (the 11th), head north for Warwick Vets alum BECKY CHACE, who is bringing her full band to Chan's in Woonsocket, $10 cover at the door (401.765.1900). Or head to Lupo's for a monster loud-ass lineup (nine bands for only $12 at the door) including Best Music Poll champs ACEROSE, A FAYLENE SKY, SCARE DON'T FEAR, JOINT DAMAGE, and more. Call 401.331.5876. Let the ass-shaking commence when MAKEUPBREAKUP and SPANISH DANCER open for Brooklyn indie kids THE PRESS at AS220 (401.831.9327), a steal at $7. The Blackstone in Pawtucket continues its support for local lo-dough gigs, and this weekend MINKY STARSHINE & THE NEW CARDINALS headline with JEFF BYRD & DIRTY FINCH on Friday, and on SATURDAY (the 12th) KRIS HANSEN'S LEFT HAND BAND (The Kollective is one of the year's best discs) supporting Mark Cutler's DINO CLUB, call 401.726.2181 for details on both shows. Club Hell hosts an all-ages throwdown to benefit Home For Our Troops with locals SHE RIDES, with help from Boston acts THE NEW ALIBIS, BLOOD STAINED BRINDLE, and SOCIAL FAILURES rocking the bill; doors at 3 pm. The Common Pub (401.253.9801) in Bristol is a raucous little venue for live shows, a proven hotspot for sonic stoners Six Star General, who will rip it up on Saturday with special guests COMA COMA and MUSTACHE RIDE (401.253.9801). On MONDAY (the 14th), catch indie upstarts STARTING OVER TUESDAY, promoting their debut Because of You, with THE FLASHING REDS opening at AS220. And on WEDNESDAY (the 16th), kick back with local crooners SUSAN SOUZA and KETURAH at the Speakeasy jazz lounge inside Local 121 (401.272.2121).

  •   THANKS FOR NOTHING: RHODE ISLAND TURKEYS 2010  |  November 22, 2011
Thanksgiving has arrived. And you know what that means: dinner with your boorish uncle, the disturbing quiver of canned cranberry sauce, and the Phoenix 's second annual list of Rhode Island turkeys — people and institutions who committed crimes against the state in the past year.
