Cool Collective at RISD's Chace Center
By CHRIS CONTI  |  December 11, 2008

Lyricists-in-training can bring the heat to AS220 when THE ELEMENTARY SHOWCASE kicks off tonight (the 11th) at 6 pm. Aspiring emcees ages 16-21 can pony up the $2 cover and rock the mic. Call 401.831.9327. Plenty of recession-friendly gigs around this evening, with CAMPLIGHT CONDUIT, one-man band MY MORNINGRADIO, and Warren's AXIOM QUARTET playing a free acoustic show at the Blackstone (401.726.2181) in Pawtucket, and MARK CUTLER performing on the cuff at the Greenwich Hotel. Head back to East Greenwich on Friday (the 12th) for the Hotel's new "Songwriters Rock the Lounge" weekly series, with acoustic talents DANIELCHASE, FRANK MARTYN, and ANA MALLOZZI teaming up. No cover charge, call 401.884.4200 for info on both shows. Also tonight: Cats (401.722.0150) in Pawtucket hosts a solid indie bill with locals FURLONG headlining with Boston's CHERRY S/T and TOOBOKU. Get a li'l culture in you on Friday (the 12th) at the RISD Museum when the Phoenix presents the COZY COLLECTIVE, a freeform jazz quintet featuring electro-composer/turntablist Tim O'Keefe. Food and cash bar available while checking out the new Chace Center, current home to Dale Chihuly's stunning glass exhibit.

The Music Friday event is 21+, call 401.454.6500. Other Friday highlights include THIS IS US (led by ex-Comic Book Super Heroes singer Steve Rodi), A FAYLENE SKY, ACEROSE, and Taunton's BLIND ASSUMPTION opening up at Jerky's Bar (401.621.2244), and jazzy reggae troupe THE NICE UPS at the Blackstone with JAZZ BASTARDS and ALMOST BLIND in tow. It's a big weekend at the Newport Blues Cafû with a pair of $10 shows benefiting Toys for Tots; harmonicat bluesman JAMES MONTGOMERY plays on Friday; on Saturday (the 13th) the renowned Latin-infused funk collective SANTA MAMBA will tear the place up. Call 401.841.5510 for details. Also on Saturday, blues enthusiasts can catch the DUKE ROBILLARD BAND doing two sets at Chan's (401.765.1900) in Woonsocket. And don't sleep on stardom-bound (and smoking hot) twin sisters from Queens known as NINA SKY, taking the stage at the Black Rep. Look up tracks like "On Some Bullshit" (hook of the year right there) and heavy-hitter remixes of the summer single "Curtain Call" with Rick Ross, Maino (the "Hi Hater" guy), and Pitbull. Call 401.353.0353. On Sunday (the 14th), Rhody rockabilly kingpins SASQUATCH& THE SICK-A-BILLYS headline with VT's RIVER CITYREBELS, DESIGNER DRUGS, PARIAH BEAT, and CALAMITY at Club Hell. Call 401.709.3923.
