DAVID BANNER, THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD

The thinking rapper’s Southern rapper has carved out a niche for himself as a straight-talking, truth-telling MC, unafraid to name names or to shine a spotlight on the failings of politicians and ’hood denizens alike. Outside the studio, Banner is fighting the good fight — in interviews, on Capitol Hill (where he testified last year, defending rap lyrics), and as a standout fundraising campaigner for post-Katrina recovery efforts.
The Greatest Story
reflects some of this awareness-raising positivity, but many of his points fall by the wayside over the course of its 22 tracks. Frontloaded with the bangers “Suicide Doors,” “9MM,” “Get like Me,” and “Shawty Say,” the album is very good; even the distracting “interludes” don’t undercut its momentum. Banner handles the majority of the production, saving his budget for the all-star guest list, which includes Snoop Dogg, Jim Jones, Chamillionaire, Akon, Chris Brown, and Lil’ Wayne (twice!). And his well-crafted beats are rooted — but not buried — in the Dirty South sound. But his producer chops and his articulate “off the record” treatises only underline the paradox of his lyrics —
The Greatest Story
would be a stronger statement if it weren’t for the conflicting cornerstones of conscientious-rapper soapboxing and standard-issue gangsta themes he’s laid at its foundation.

From ’Ye to mixtapes
To get the full taste of where hip-hop is at, you also have to seek out the unofficial releases, the mixtapes, which often have a bigger impact than the official albums.
Review: Akon | Freedom
Back in April 2007, R&B singer and rapper Akon dry-humped a 15-year-old girl on stage, an incident that led to some overblown criticism in the conservative media.

The street scene
Without getting into the history and the morality of mixtapes, it’s worth mentioning that Pharrell isn’t the first rapper who’s scored more artistic points with a mixtape than with a sanctioned label release. Pop goes a Neptune: Pharrell Williams raps his way into a corner. By Nick Sylvester
The Big Hurt: Billboard Top Hip-Hop and R and B songs
This week, a jolly traipse through one of Billboard 's most artistically fecund charts: "Top Hip-Hop and R&B Songs." What wonders await?

| September 27, 2011
"Witch house" isn't the best tag for an act to get saddled with straight out of the gate, and when Balam Acab's first EP, See Birds, dropped about a year ago, that term had less of its current flash-in-the-pan feel.

Independent Italo-disco throwback record label Italians Do It Better is rooted as deeply in punk-rock DIY as it is in dance 12-inches from the '70s and drugged-out '80s club-night afterparties.
