When Mike Doughty emerged from the ashes of the quirky alt-rock band Soul Coughing with his first solo disc, 2005’s
Haughty Melodic
(ATO), the result was far from a major departure in its music or its lyrics. The sardonic, word-drunk singer-songwriter has settled down a bit on
Golden Delicious
, but finding a good groove remains his priority. “Fort Hood,” the anti-war tribute to the casualty-riddled Texas military base, hangs his plain-speak delivery of lines like “You should be getting stoned with a prom dress, girl/You should still believe in an endless world” on a bright and shiny chorus that brings to mind “Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In.” “I Wrote a Song About Your Car” keeps it simple, with quick lyrical jabs and some polished pop funk driving a hooky chorus. And “27 Jennifers,” a tune fans will recall from Doughty’s live sets, emerges transformed from a straight-up pop song into a saucy blues that incorporates a synth hook — just the sort of skewed arrangement Doughty has always had a liking for.

Déjà vu
Prepare yourselves: R.E.M. have decided to become a rock band again.
Colbie Caillat
This singer-songwriter is part of an emerging breed of Billboard-climbing folk-pop babes using YouTube and MySpace to build a devoted audience from the hard drive up.
Mark Olson
The album shimmers with the sort of musical detail that keeps woe-is-me songwriting from sounding (entirely) like a pity party.
Pop elegy
If every generation has its Love Story , its tragic tale of romance and loss, then Rob Sheffield’s Love Is a Mix Tape is that book for those who came of age with indie rock.
Darling Downs
Australia has always had a way of taking American genres and making them their own in a down-to-earth way, from the breeziness of singer-songwriter Paul Kelly to the power pop of the Hoodoo Gurus and You Am I to the garage rumblings of Lime Spiders and Jet.
Lit rock and roll
In his ill-fitting khaki blazer, button-down shirt, and floppy necktie, Colin Meloy looked every bit the rumpled college professor as he stood with the Decemberists in front of a Japanese-themed backdrop. Slideshow: The Decemberists at the Orpheum Theatre, November 4, 2006
The Huff post
Listening to him now, it’s clear that Brad Huff’s career was just getting started with his former act, the Jim James Band.
Three for all
You hear a lot about local musicians splitting the scene for greener pastures.
Moore on the fringe
Name-dropping has never been a favorite pastime on this page, but something came up in an interview I had with Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore last week that I wanted to pass along.
Bangkok Dangerous
For genre fare Hollywood has long turned to Asia for a creative spark.
