Ringo Starr has never made an album that’s less than entertaining, and there aren’t many Beatles you can say that about. Still, his latest gets squished in a clash of producers’ egos. When the disc was nearly done, he split with Mark Hudson, his producer/collaborator of the past decade, and handed the tapes over to former Eurythmic Dave Stewart, whose “re-production” here makes Phil Spector’s work on

sound tasteful. Hudson isn’t exactly subtle either, so a batch of perfectly good songs are weighted into studio extravaganzas, with poor Ringo caught in the middle. Prime offender is the title track, which should have been a comfy bit of nostalgia but gets inflated to a
Pepper
-esque epic. Elsewhere, there are so many clashing vocal parts and guitar effects that you have to strain to hear the actual songs. Which is a shame, because said songs (all of which Ringo co-wrote) are pretty good. “Tuff Love” and “Think About You” are up there with the irresistibly tuneful singles that Starr released in the ’70s. And “Harry’s Song” is a touching remembrance of his old mate Harry Nilsson. Someone should have realized that you don’t need so many frills when you have one of rock’s best drummers and most likable personalities in the house.

It Does Come Easy
Ringo Starr was the best artist in the Beatles. And, I believe, the best artist to appear on Shining Time Station too. (Sorry, George Carlin.) It feels really weird to say, but it's the undisputable conclusion I drew from seeing "Ringo Starr — Artist" at Chabot Fine Art Gallery (379 Atwells Avenue, Providence, through June 27).

Twisted Roots have a new album out. We know. The album will be reviewed. Stop e-mailing us.
Dr. Dog
It comes as a warning of sorts: when Dr. Dog miss their mark, they miss it by a mile.

You had to be there
Anyone who grew up with the Beatles will always be tempted to say what Ringo Starr is reported to have said to a John Lennon impersonator: “I knew the real one.”

Pretty damn corny
What of the Beatles?
Spouting off during downtime in an interview with jazz drummer/composer Steve Grover, I once put forward my ill-researched idea that the third song is almost universally the best song on a great album.
That’s just super(groups)
You know, ideas are the easy part. It’s the execution that gets tricky.

In a video posted to his Web site, former Rolling Stone Ringo Starr has lovingly warned his fans to stop sending him fan mail.

WALTER SICKERT LEADS A BAND OF MUSICAL MISFITS
| February 05, 2011
When Walter Sickert and his Army of Broken Toys played an official First Night show at the Hynes Auditorium on New Year's Eve, they ran overtime and the soundman pulled the plug — which isn't quite the smartest way of shutting down an acoustic band.

When Guided by Voices announced their reunion tour this year, it marked a milestone of sorts for the Dayton band. This is arguably the first conventional career move they've ever made.

REVIEW: ROCK OF AGES

At the start of the hair-metal musical Rock of Ages (at the Colonial Theatre through October 17), narrator Lonny (Patrick Lewallen) promises a night of sexy decadence and general kick-assery.
