Plus, a full week of free stuff
By CHRIS CONTI  |  August 21, 2013
Strange Famous Records will reconvene at Fête as the Church of Providence series continues on THURSDAY (the 22nd) with B. Dolan and legendary Dorchester wordsmith Akrobatik headlining, along with ESH & Dox, Choppa Tha Beatboxa, a freestyle rap battle hosted by SFR bossman Sage Francis and much more, all for just $10 at the door; dial 401.383.1113 for details. A solid weekend is on tap at Nick-a-Nee’s, with Shacklehands taking the stage FRIDAY (the 23rd) and a Killdevils reunion slated for SATURDAY (the 24th; no cover and 21+ for both shows (401,861.7290). There’s another solid weekend of free shows at the Narragansett Café, with Keturah & the Vinyl Grooves performing on Saturday; and head back there SUNDAY (the 25th) for the James Montgomery Band starting around 4 pm. Call 401.423.2150 for details on both gigs. On TUESDAY (the 27th), dust off the six-string and hop on the acoustic Open Mic at the Parlour (formerly the Penalty Box, 401.383.5858). On WEDNESDAY (the 28th), DJ Red Beard spins reggae-dancehall at the Salon (21+, no cover, 401.865.6330). And we have a budget-friendly THURSDAY (the 29th) already mapped out for you: start at Burnside Park for the ’Mericans (free, starts around 5 pm); then make tracks to the Parlour for the debut of a monthly showcase featuring various local acts. It kicks off with a doozy: Vudu Sister’s Keith McCurdy, Jay Berndt (of Kilgore fame), King Sickabilly, Bill Keough (Galvanize), and more — free of charge!
