Halloween fun and more!

Monster mash
By CHRIS CONTI  |  October 24, 2012

How's your FRIDAY (the 26th) shaping up? Head downtown and start it off with a sonic boom courtesy of the 75orLess Records stable, with SIX STAR GENERAL, ME JANE, and BROADCASTER playing a gig at PVD Social Club ($5, 7 pm), then mosey over to AS220 (401.831.9327) for a monster bill featuring TONGUE DYNASTY, LOLITA BLACK (yes!), THRILLHOUSE, and SORCERY. And at Dusk (one of the city's best venues), get down with MARK SULTAN, TINY PILLS, THE SILKS, and DJ TY JESSO spinning all night (21+, $10, 401.714.0444). Halloween comes early at Firehouse 13 when they host SONS OF FRANKENSTEIN, A DYING BREED, GUT BUCKET, and more ($8, 401.270.1801). And for our South Coast buds, get to the Black Watch Pub in New Bedford (508.997.0023) and check out 2012 Best Music Poll champs VERTICAL TWIN and guests. A busy weekend at Nick-a-Nee's (401.861.7290) kicks off Friday with blues guitar-slinger PAUL GEREMIA, then head back there SATURDAY (the 27th) for THE GOODS. Other Saturday highlights include TRIANGLE FOREST headlining a Halloween costume party at Roots Café (401.272.7422) with KID CHOCOLATE, NICK PAGANO (ex-Fairhaven), and THE MANTIS; the KC MOANERS jug band visit Stone Soup Coffeehouse (at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Pawtucket, 401.457.7147). And in Newport, a killer 75orLess showcase is at Billy Goode's (401.848.5013) starring COMA COMA and THE DIEPODS. On MONDAY (the 29th), Broadcaster is the featured act for the "Mondays On Blast" series (sponsored by 990WBOB.com) at the Apartment (401.228.7222). And on Halloween WEDNESDAY (the 31st), sport a costume and save a coupla bucks on the cover charge for THE SUGAR HONEY ICED TEA at AS220 with THE CRAZY EXES FROM HELL, the KRISTEN FORD BAND, and RICH FERRI & THE WEALTH ON THE WATER.

The new EP by PVD trio Gertrude Atherton, Isle of Lost Skulls , is a gnarled beauty of a debut and proves to be well worth the wait. I have been eagerly anticipating this record since catching drummer Melanie Fuest, singer/guitarist Shannon Le Corre, and bassist Nicole Lagace in action a dozen or so times over the past year.
