The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Out of Frequency

Stars
Getting a boost with songs from their 2009 debut,
Fruit
, featured in iPod and Heineken ads, and getting handpicked as concert openers by a then-still-functioning Amy Winehouse in their native Copenhagen, the Asteroids Galaxy Tour rode a lucky streak out of the gate. The second time around is never as easy, though this genre-bending dance-pop collective drop soul, funk, and jazz like a Danish Bayou brass band on "Major," "Dollars in the Night," and a made-for-the-dance floor stunner "Ghost in My Head." On the latter, singer Mette Lindberg channels "Like a Feather"-era Nikka Costa. When it works, the results are devastating. Check the line "You got me head over heels on gasoline/You know how it feels, like nic-o-tine" from lead single "Heart Attack." Who cares what the hell it means, it's ridic-contagious. But sometimes
Out of Frequency
wavers into old-school television-theme-song territory, like a ramped-up take on M Squad or some bad dating show at the turn of the '80s. And at points, Lindberg's voice has a tendency to wear thin and sound childlike —think bad Jackson 5. No matter: there's still enough beguilement here — no need to sell us with commercials.

Assaf Kehati Quartet | Flowers and Other Stories
The Boston-based Israeli guitarist Assaf Kehati and his quartet know how to straddle the great divide.
Brite Futures | Dark Past
A few years ago, the cutesy teens in Natalie Portman's Shaved Head slid out of Seattle on the hot pink shoulders of robo-bounce kinda-hit "Me + Ur Daughter" and the cheap intrigue of a ridiculous moniker.
Grimes | Visions
The debut record from Grimes, an alias of the Montreal-based Boucher, kicks off the peculiarity parade by presenting song titles steeped in cutesy affectation.
Nite Jewel | One Second of Love
Los Angeles songstress Ramona Gonzalez began home-recording dark dance music in 2008, attracting the attention of blogspots and boutique labels with her soulful voice, lo-fi post-disco beats, and distinct sense of weirdo minimalism.
Washed Out | Within and Without
Two summers ago, a number of glo-fi buzz bands surfed trendy chillwaves around the blogosphere, reaching mild popularity amongst fans of subtle, retro dance beats and laid-back vibes.
Ash Borer | Ash Borer
NorCal black-metal trio Ash Borer's debut full-length is as diminutive as their namesake (limited to a 150-cassette run) but no less destructive or striking as they hurtle through three tracks in 40 minutes.
Active Child | You Are All I See
Pat Grossi used to be a choirboy, which is not surprising at all, given that his full-length debut under the Active Child moniker sounds like it was cut in some sort of dimly lit, hallowed hall under the cover of night.
Review: Glee: The 3D Concert Movie
The little TV series with the can-do pipes rolls out a concert tour that's essentially a love-in with its fan base.
Ten years in, Ladytron grounded by Gravity
More than a decade into their career as trusted electro-pop veterans, Ladytron's place in the world of pop music seems as precarious as when they started.
Review: Puss in Boots 3-D
A mad scientist in The Skin I Live In and a talking cat in Puss in Boots : is there anything Antonio Banderas can't do?
Review: Janie Jones
Borrowing the name of a Clash song with which it has nothing in common, this generic riff on the Crazy Heart template by writer/director David M. Rosenthal ( Falling Up ) also cribs from Sofia Coppola's Somewhere .

SHIRLEY MANSON DISHES ON GARBAGE'S RETURN
| May 23, 2012
Lots of folks are calling this outing by Garbage a reunion, but according to frontwoman Shirley Manson, it's nothing of the sort; it was just the right moment for the alt-rockers to rev it up again after a seven-year chill period.

Second acts are hard enough to deliver successfully in the pantheon of hard rock, so it's surprising then that the Cult, now well into their third go-round, still give their audience exactly what they crave.
