You Me at Six - Sinners Never Sleep

There was no reason for UK act You Me at Six to do much more than stay the pop-punk-ish course that helped them become the darlings of the Brit-rock press — plus the objects of desire for English high school girls who wanted a Jack's Mannequin to call their own. Two years ago the band fit that bill with their breakthrough effort,
Hold Me Down
, but this time around finds them sharpening the knife, and singer Josh Franceschi twisting it deeper into an already damaged and bleeding heart. The familiar sound is still there; look no further than lead single "Loverboy" and the sweeping "Crash." But there is some straight-up death metal and hardcore help along the way that's as jarring as it is an exciting addition. Vocalist Oli Sykes of Bring Me the Horizon adds a few guttural accents to "Bite My Tongue," and Winston McCall of Aussie metal-core outfit Parkway Drive takes it to another level on "Time Is Money." He comes in toward the end of the three-minute track and adds yet another extremely beefy dimension.
Sinners Never Sleep
is a transitional album, though such efforts rarely bode as well for the future as this does.

The little TV series with the can-do pipes rolls out a concert tour that's essentially a love-in with its fan base.
Review: Janie Jones
Borrowing the name of a Clash song with which it has nothing in common, this generic riff on the Crazy Heart template by writer/director David M. Rosenthal ( Falling Up ) also cribs from Sofia Coppola's Somewhere .
Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone
Lev Anderson and Chris Metzler's documentary details Fishbone's quarter-century journey from musically-diverse South Central middle school classmates to becoming one of the most influential Los Angeles bands of the '80s.
Review: Joyful Noise
There's not much joy but there's plenty of noise of the rafter-rocking gospel singing variety in Tony Graff's musical dramedy.
Brite Futures | Dark Past
A few years ago, the cutesy teens in Natalie Portman's Shaved Head slid out of Seattle on the hot pink shoulders of robo-bounce kinda-hit "Me + Ur Daughter" and the cheap intrigue of a ridiculous moniker.
A Place to Bury Strangers | Onwards to the Wall
Onwards to the Wall clocks in at 16 minutes and 35 seconds, and it could shatter into smithereens at any moment.
Cloud Nothings | Attack on Memory
With Attack on Memory , the third full-length from Cleveland-based Cloud Nothings, 20-year-old frontman Dylan Baldi approaches new, drastically darker material with the same empty-bottle angst that made his previous releases so appealing.
Imperial Teen | Feel the Sound
Like its title, fifth album Feel the Sound is as generic as doubters have probably always assumed — they sound both relaxed and exhausted.
The Woodrow Wilsons | The Devil Jonah
The Woodrow Wilsons are a haushold name — to anyone familiar with Jamaica Plain's Whitehaus Collective, that is.
Review: Immortals
In Ancient Greece a stonemason is plucked from obscurity to battle evil while a posse of beautiful gods looks on from their fabulous Olympian penthouse, before plunging earthwards to kick mortal butt.

SHIRLEY MANSON DISHES ON GARBAGE'S RETURN
| May 23, 2012
Lots of folks are calling this outing by Garbage a reunion, but according to frontwoman Shirley Manson, it's nothing of the sort; it was just the right moment for the alt-rockers to rev it up again after a seven-year chill period.
