Holiday hits

Plus, Senior Discount’s Xmas medley
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  December 21, 2011

There are quite a few worthwhile gigs on the local live circuit during this typically quiet Xmas week. Local 121's Tap Room starts the weekend off proper with DJ WAY O'MALLEY (also guitarist for the bad-ass Panther Modern) on the turntables THURSDAY (the 22nd), followed by DJ NICKDE PARIS on FRIDAY (the 23rd); both sets are 21+ with no cover, call 401.274.2121 for the full scoop. Also on Friday, the Met hosts local jam quintet SAUCE (their "Christmas Time on Planet Funk" party) with guests THE ALCHEMYSTICS; $10 at the door, call 401.729.1005. Enjoy the last-minute mall anxiety, pro football, and yuletide cheer this weekend, then get back after it with A FAYLENE SKY and DIE ANOTHER DAY leading the way at Firehouse 13 (401.270.1801) on TUESDAY (the 27th), while the Whiskey Republic (401.588.5158) continues their free-of-charge "Tuesdays Unplugged" series with singer/songwriters BRIAN MARQUIS, MATT DUQUETTE, and ANDREW SPATZ. On WEDNESDAY (the 28th), the Roots Café will help you work off those extra holiday lbs. with their MID-WEEK RUMBA, with dance lessons starting at 8 pm followed by DJ PAPO and special guests; $7 cover, call 401.272.7422. Or join DJ PRIMITIVE and guests at Two9Five (on Da Hill, 401437.8740) spinning the best in underground and indie hip-hop. And for our thirsty punk friends, get down to Fête in Olneyville for their new General Assembly Presents series, this week featuring SOURPUNCH, DRUNK ROBB & THE SHOTS, annd THE McGUNKS. No cover charge and $2 'Gansett tallboys? Can't beat it, call 401.383.1112 and check out one of the best new additions to the city's music community.

Finally, in the spirit of giving, veteran punk crew SENIOR DISCOUNT is giving away their Christmas Medley album 100% free of charge, featuring eight holiday classics spun up S*D style — download it now at seniordiscountmusic.com.

Y'all have a safe and happy holiday!
