New local Xmas tunes

And more!
By SAM PFEIFLE  |  December 14, 2011

Don Campbell isn't the only local who's in the spirit. Here's a selection of other newly released original Christmas tunes this season:

CAM GROVES, "OCCUPY THE NORTH POLE" Who says hip-hoppers don't have the holiday spirit? Cam gives a hilarious populist take here ("everybody's broke as fuck and the economy blows"), and the toy xylophone is a nice touch.

DOCTOR ASTRONAUT, "CUM FOR CHRISTMAS" Okay, there's not much for production here, a slow beat, maudlin chords, a shaker that might remind of jingle bells, kind of like "Major Tom," but Doc Astro gets major points for making Christmas traditions sound lewd: He'd like "to fill your stocking up, girl"; "I want your milk and cookies, girl/I want your Swedish fish."

THE SEA CAPTAINS, "EVERGREEN" Opening as plaintive indie pop, the Captains continue their new-found holiday tradition of releases with a smart tune that gets pretty raging by the end, with warm harmonies and radio rock guitar riffs in the finish.

BILLY LIBBY, "CAN'T WAIT FOR CHRISTMAS TIME" Utterly charming, this tune is jingledy jangledy in all the right ways (find the video online, too, as long as you're not a cynical dick), and tinged with Billy's signature winsomeness: "The greatest gifts aren't under the tree/It's the time we share and the memories." I want to put him in my pocket and take him home.
