Two great freebies

Plus, last chance for What Cheer? in ’11
By CHRIS CONTI  |  November 15, 2011

Last call to catch local country-punk heroes GIRL HAGGARD in action at the Met on THURSDAY (the 17th), where Mandy Allan (voted best female vocalist in our 2011 music poll) and the boys open for Nashville Pussy and Supersuckers (wow). And get back there on FRIDAY (the 18th) for WBRU's Sweet Potato Ball (benefiting the RI Food Bank) with 2011 Rock Hunt champs VULGARRITY (file under: Must-See Entertainment) opening for Sleeper Agent and the Joy Formidable. Tix are $20; call 401.729.1005 for info on both shows. And a great Friday night freebie at the Apartment (401.228.7222) features THE JESSE MINUTE with THE UNIBROWS and WHITE DEVILS. On SATURDAY (the 19th), ROUTE .44 should be unleashing some new stuff on us at the Spot Underground with improv-jazz locals INTERPLAY (401.383.7133). You can't do much better than a free double-bill with COMA COMA and the Jesse Minute at the Common Pub in Bristol (the East Bay's best live dive, 401.253.9801). Just around the corner at Judge Roy Bean's (401.253.7526) it's another 75orLess Records rep in GOOD TIME CHARLIE. (Speaking of 75or Less, Broadcaster is looking for a drummer, inquire at broadcastertheband@gmail.com). And Firehouse 13 hosts an all-ages soiree with WHAT CHEER? BRIGADE and punk vets BRUNT OF IT, plus "mystery special guests." This is WCB's last local show until springtime, and sure sounds like $7 well-spent (call 401.270.1801). On SUNDAY (the 20th), get to the Spot Underground early for a solo set by BILL KEOUGH, who will pull out a few new cuts from the forthcoming Galvanize debut EP, due out next month; Everclear's Art Alexakis headlines, hit up Etix.com in advance. Ahead to WEDNESDAY (the 23rd) — get proactive on the forthcoming Turkey Day food coma and hit the Newport Blues Café dance floor hard with R&B collective FELIX BROWN; $5 cover, call 401.841.5510.

  •   FAIRHAVEN MAKES IT EPIC ON PLAN A  |  May 22, 2012
I never imagined Fairhaven's arena-sized piano-pop rock sound could get any more "mature and polished" than the swooning anthems on their 2010 debut Origins , but that's how Fairhaven lead singer Alan Connell described the new album, Plan A , when he sent a copy my way a few weeks back. He wasn't kidding.

"We don't really have a plan for the band. All we are concerned with at the moment is writing songs that we love and having some fun. If it takes off — great, and if it doesn't, no one is going to be upset.
