CRETIN HOP Jones promises a non-stop party.

A pair of highly-recommended shows are on tap this Saturday (Rocktober the 1st!) in the capital city — Singing About Providence will celebrate and salute Provy's 375th birthday at the Church of the Redeemer with help from some of the best local singer/songwriters on the circuit, while the third annual Boobstock fest boasts a stacked (ahem) lineup ready to rock at the Apartment.

Singing About Providence will showcase original city-specific tunes penned by members of the Rhode Island Songwriters Association (risongwriters.com). RISA is a vital outlet which regularly hosts songwriting workshops, open mics, and performances at pubs and coffee nooks statewide.

Six RISA members each chose two songs written by their peers, as well as one of their own, a RISA tradition designed to "give more input from different styles and viewpoints on the subject matter and interpretations of the songs by the performers." I checked in with Heather Rose about the project. She's known for taking great pride in her songwriting, and was up for this unique challenge.

"I decided to step away from how I traditionally write songs and instead treat the contest like an assignment," Rose said. "I went to the library and took out book after book on Roger Williams, and studied up like I was going to be tested.

"My theory was, the more I engulfed myself in the subject matter, the more possible it would be for me to put myself in his position and write a song in his perspective."

Poet Indigo Bethea will also read her works about Providence between sets.

October 1 marks the start of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and what better way to kick off the hope for a cure than Boobstock! Adam Palazio, owner of Rhody-based internet music outlet 990WBOB.com, founded Boobstock in 2009 after all-too-familiar circumstances — his mother suffered from breast cancer.

"I learned how her experience can affect an entire family and realized how important it is for anyone who may suffer from this disease to receive the proper care."

All donations at the door will benefit Women & Infants' Integrative Care Program in Women's Oncology.

The eclectic lineup includes some of our finest local acts, ranging from acoustic crooners (Daniel Chase, Jon Tierney) to spiced-up jazz (Miss Wensday) to alt-pop (Sienna) to psychobilly fun provided by Tony Jones & the Cretin 3. Jones hosts a homegrown show on 990WBOB.com and performed at the first two Boobstock installments (formerly held at Firehouse 13).

"The night is pretty much a non-stop party, so I always tell people to come early and stay late," said Jones earlier this week via email. The event has found a new home at the Apartment in the Jewelry District, one of PVD's best live music venues.

When asked if this worthwhile throwdown will remain an annual event, Jones replied:

"As soon as closing time hits on Saturday night, we'll start planning for Boobstock 2012."

The new EP by PVD trio Gertrude Atherton, Isle of Lost Skulls , is a gnarled beauty of a debut and proves to be well worth the wait. I have been eagerly anticipating this record since catching drummer Melanie Fuest, singer/guitarist Shannon Le Corre, and bassist Nicole Lagace in action a dozen or so times over the past year.
