Cobra-Matics x 3

Plus, the Stone Soup Folk Fest
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  September 8, 2010

Hit the Box on North Main Street for a good one FRIDAY (the 10th), led by THE JESSE MINUTE and SIX STAR GENERAL, plus THE MOOD, and NEW IDEA SOCIETY; $5 at the door, call 401.331.8545. Also on Friday, the recently-elusive GAMBLIN' HANDS open for THE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS at Club Hell (401.709.3923). Johnny "The Colonel" Maguire kindly dropped off a copy of the next COBRA-MATICS record, as the band cranks out three sets this week, starting with the Music Friday series at the RISD Museum ($8, doors at 5:30 pm), and be sure to hit Nick-a-Nee's (401.861.7290) early on SATURDAY (the 11th) for the Cobra-Matics and ATLANTIC THRILLS opening for GIRL HAGGARD; 21+ and no cover all night; and on WEDNESDAY (the 15th), warming up for Butch Hancock.

Notable Saturday events include MARK CUTLER'S MEN OF GREAT COURAGE at the Box, and YOUNG NEAL & THE VIPERS still going strong with a return visit to Chan's in Woonsocket ($12, 401.765.1900). Stop by the Pawtucket Arts Fest in Slater Park this weekend for the STONE SOUP FOLK FEST (Saturday and Sunday beginning at 10 am), with performances from the DOUBLE DECKER DANCE BAND, ANNIE'S CORDIAL (request their lullaby cover of "Under the Milky Way"), THE GNOMES, and the RHODE ISLAND PHILHARMONIC. Free admission for the entire family, call 401.724.5200 for details.

And speaking of Le Bucket, take your pick on WEDNESDAY: Machines With Magnets (401.475.2655) hosts locals HOLY SHEET and GILA MONSTER alongside Canadian face-melters AIDS WOLF, AN ALBATROSS, and RED MASS, all for just $5 at the door; and another quality 'BRU Cheap Date show hits the Met (401.729.1005) featuring scalding-hot Brooklyn duo SLEIGH BELLS. At only $9.55, you best hit up etix.com in advance for this one.
